Hershey Area Playhouse Announces Summer Drama Camps
“Storysoup” is offered for children entering grades 1 and 2 and meets from 9AM – 10:00 AM daily, Monday June 13th through Friday June 24th with an evening performance on the 24th. Using favorite children’s stories and music, campers will learn beginning acting skills with an emphasis on creative dramatics and the imagination. It is a fast paced theatre class for young children with an emphasis on games and fun. The cost of this camp is $100.00.
“Jack Tales” is designed for children entering grades 3, 4 and 5 and meets from 10:30 AM – 11:30 daily, Monday June 13th through Friday June 24th with an evening performance on the 24th . Improvisation and storytelling techniques will be interwoven with acting skills as children learn to bring to life stories from the Appalachian culture. The cost of this camp is $100.00.
“Whose Story is it Anyway?” is provided for youth entering grades 6, 7 and 8and meets from 12:30 – 2:00 PM daily, Monday June 13th through Friday June 24th with an evening performance on the 24th. These older students will learn acting with an emphasis on improvisation. Working with famous fairy tales the group will write their own “fractured” version to perform for the open house. The cost of this camp is $135.00.
“Scene Study Workshop” is available for teens entering grades 9 – 12 and meets from 2:30 – 4:00 daily, Monday June 13th through Friday June 24th with an evening performance on the 24th. Teens will study more intense acting skills using excerpts from the classics – Chekov, Moliere, Ibsen, Miller and other great authors. The class will emphasize voice and movement for the stage as well as character study. The cost is $135.00.
“Musical Theatre Workshop” is a week long full-day experience for youth and teens entering grades 7 – 12. There is a prerequisite of taking a HAP Acting camp or permission from the instructor. Meets from 10:00 AM – 4PM daily, Monday June 27th through Friday July 1st. This camp is designed for serious acting students interested in cultivating skills that will help them “get the part.” Students will cycle through two hours of dance, music and acting with a break for lunch. (bring your own)
Come to this workshop to learn how to choose and prepare a song for auditions, what to do when the audition asks you to be ready with a few simple dance steps and how to handle cold readings and audition monologues. In addition to these skills the class will prepare excerpts from Broadway musicals including song and dance routines. The last class will feature an afternoon open house. The cost of the musical theater workshop is $200.00.
Acting classes will be taught by area director and youth theatre specialist Ms. Cory Wilkerson. Dance instructor Sandy McCann of McCann School of Dance and area vocal instructor Cindy Nye will join Ms. Wilkerson in teaching the Musical Theatre Camp.
