Even though Santa’s ho ho ho has faded, there are still lots of joyous moments to be had as the Hershey Area Playhouse Theatre Academy spices up the winter months with a full range of acting classes for children, youth and adults. This season’s sessions build from the Academy motto “developing excellence and growing creativity”; classes will focus on solid skill building by building on imagination in a big way.
Classes for children and youth begin Saturday January 20th, and run eight weeks until Saturday March 10th. Our youngest actors in grades K-3, meeting 9:00 – 10:30, will focus on creative play, imaginary journeys and other imagination stretchers. Grades 4-6, meeting 10:30 -12:00, will go character crazy, finding character motivation and inner monologues and letting the characters play. Our 7th -12th grade students, meeting 1:00 – 3:00, will build off beloved comedy improv games to look at ways to apply improv to text, with a focus on using your imagination to shine at auditions.
We will also continue the popular adult acting series with a three-week stint of longer “weekend warrior” classes held Saturdays from 12:30 -3:30 PM on January 27th, February 3rd and February 10th. Join the theatre academy for one of our popular classes based on sequential repeatable skills and taught by experienced theatre and education professionals
Why take acting classes?
Our students tell us that acting classes help them form friendships; many cite their experiences with the Hershey Area Playhouse as having created a sense of family. Not only that but our students are thriving in the arts in their schools- active in roles in semiprofessional theatre and broadening their horizons by working backstage or appearing in roles in our main stage productions. Our adult actors tell us they have gained confidence and poise, and our teachers tell us they learn every day from the enthusiastic students who enter our doors.
More importantly for parents however, statistics tell us that participating in the dramatic arts actually has a measurable effect on student performance in school. MENC: The National Association for Music Education, The American Alliance for Theatre and Education, and the website for Americans for the Arts all cite research that shows a correlation between the arts and things like reading comprehension, school attendance and social skills. Most notably, The College Entrance Examination Board has reported that students involved in dramatic performance score an average of 65.5 points higher on the verbal component of the SAT and 35.5 points higher in the Math component.
So not only is acting fun, but as suspected, it better prepares you for life, helps you in your career, and grows confidence and creativity! What’s not to love?
