Hershey Area Playhouse Theatre Academy Announces Summer Drama Camp

Theatrical Opportunities for Students Entering Grades 1-12

HERSHEY, Pa., May 3, 2017 – Taught by instructors with experience in theatre and education, Hershey Area Playhouse Theatre Academy announces its 2017 summer Performance Camp, running the weeks of June 19-23 and 26-30.

The theme for this year’s Performance Camp will be creating a character, and campers will explore stories filled with interesting personalities to bring to life on stage. Students will be able to participate in one of three sessions, depending on grade level.

In the Kids Camp Jr. – Stories on Stage session, students entering grades 1-3 will learn to put a story on stage using creative drama, creative movement and storytelling techniques to explore characters with an emphasis on fun. These youngest campers will perform the final day of class, showing off what can happen when imaginations are combined with a good story.

“This is a fast-paced session for early elementary children with an emphasis on developing imaginations and creativity,” said Camp Director Cory Wilkerson.

In the Kids Camp – Popping Off the Page session, students entering grades 4-6 will learn to act by working with interesting characters and roles within a scripted production. Games and improvisations build skills, leading up to a final performance costumed and staged by our professional directors for an evening gala the last day of camp.

In the Studio & Scene Study – Heroes and Heroines session, students entering grades 7-12 will explore heroes and heroines – strong characters who make bold choices – as text for learning. This class places an emphasis on understanding and creating a unique character, exploring the question: how does an actor create a role? Fast-paced games and exercises help students stretch imaginations and learn audition skills. This class ends with a fully-costumed production staged for an evening performance on the last day of class.

“The Studio & Scene session will place emphasis on text analysis, improvisational games, acting technique, voice and movement to help students stretch imaginations and learn audition skills,” said Wilkerson.

All Performance Camp sessions will be held at the Playhouse, located at Sandhill Road and Cherry Drive, Hershey and will culminate with an evening performance on June 30 on the Playhouse stage.
